Best night vision setup for under $4k?

Looking to get into night vision without spending a fortune. Is a used PVS-14 still the right answer, or is thermal a better first buy for someone mostly scanning open ground? Curious what everyone runs and what you'd skip.

Thermal is great for detection but you can't navigate with it. Night vision first, thermal later.

A used PVS-14 is still the best entry point. Spend the difference on a good IR illuminator before you chase a better tube.
